Why Calais

In order to find a suitable location for a proposed LNG facility, many geographic, environmental, cultural, navigational and marine criteria must be met. We believe this constellation of requirements has been found.

Jim Lewis, an LNG industry expert who has been involved in major LNG developments for the past 40 years and a senior advisor on this project, describes the Calais site as “the best site for an LNG terminal that I have seen on the eastern seaboard.”

Further details of the site’s ideal components are listed below:

Minimal Environmental Impacts

Although we are just beginning comprehensive and required environmental surveys of our site location, we are confident that environmental impacts can be minimized at our proposed site.

There are limited commercial fishing and lobstering activities in immediate proximity of
the proposed site.

Minimal Aesthetic Impacts

The topography of our site limits visual impacts from Route One. An industrial mining and shipping complex is located on the Canadian side of the St. Croix River, directly across from our site.

Current Infrastructure Capacity

Our proposed site is located roughly seven miles from downtown Calais, far exceeding the setback standards established by the Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC)

Furthermore, being located within the city limits of Calais offers advantages because of the existing infrastructure, such as full-time emergency services and the Calais Regional Hospital. Our site is also located in close proximity (approximately 20 miles) to the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline.

Community Support

Residents and business owners in Calais have expressed consistent support for our project. The Calais City Council approved a resolution in support of a similar project in the same area just a few years ago.

The mayor of Calais remains very supportive of the proposal, and held a public workshop with the City Council on April 8, 2008 to meet with our team and to learn more about our project.

The Calais City Council unanimously endorsed a resolution supporting the Calais LNG project on April 10, 2008.
